've worked directly with traumatized children in mental health hospitals, group homes and in our home for more than twenty years. My wife and I have been blessed to care for many traumatized children, one at a time, from the foster care system. We are adoptive parents of two amazing siblings from that system. I have a Master's Degree in Human Services specializing in Family Studies & Intervention Strategies. I have been a Foster Parent Recruiter, I’ve served on the Board of Directors of the most innovative and effective Foster Care Program I know of.
I am currently the Director of Services at San Diego Youth Services.
I have dedicated my life to transforming foster care from one of our most broken and damaging systems to a new brand of Foster Care that we can ALL be proud to be a part of. It’s hard to imagine having a greater impact on another’s life than taking in and caring for a hurt and scared child during that child’s greatest time of need.
In my 25 years of experience caring for children — as pediatrician, parenting consultant, and leader in the field of child welfare — it is rare to encounter anyone with the commitment, passion and life experience of Jamie Thomas. He is a professional who cares deeply for children and applies innovative thinking to the critical problems that face our seriously damaged foster care system.
Having closely followed the development of Foster Care 2.0, I am convinced that these methods must play a central role if we are to protect and heal the 400,000 children currently living in out-of-home care, not to mention the thousands that will inevitably follow if we fail to take action. We ignore Jamie Thomas and his prescriptions at our peril.
